Identifying Different Types of Metal
First indicators for differentiation
Metals can often be distinguished based on a few simple characteristics. Color, weight, or even a magnet test can provide initial clues about the type of metal. Changes over time can also offer additional hints for a first assessment.
Color as a first indicator
Color is often the quickest way to identify a type of metal:
- Copper → reddish
- Brass → golden yellow
- Aluminum → silvery/light
- Steel → grey
- Lead → dark grey
Weight comparison
Weight can also be an important distinguishing factor. For objects of the same size, metals can vary significantly:
- Aluminum (approx. 2.7 g/cm³) → very light
- Steel (approx. 7.85 g/cm³) → heavy
- Brass (approx. 8.5 g/cm³) → heavier
- Copper (approx. 8.9 g/cm³) → heavier
- Lead (approx. 11.34 g/cm³) → very heavy
These differences are due to the density of each metal.
Magnetic or not?
A simple magnet can also help with identification:
- Steel → magnetic
- Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Lead → not magnetic
How metals change over time
Weather and usage leave typical marks on the surface:
- Copper → develops a green patina
- Brass → tarnishes over time
- Aluminum → usually remains bright
- Steel → can rust
- Lead → becomes dull and dark
